WEEK ENDING 24 SEPTEMBER 2000

Dark-bellied Brent Goose (Branta bernicla)
10 north past, 27 south past and one standing on Ness Point, 23rd September.
118 south past Corton in 45 minutes early morning, on 24th September.

Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus)
One flying south over Gorleston Road, Oulton on the morning of the 20th September. Part of  a large arrival along the East Coast.
One flying south at Corton, mobbed by a Hobby (Falco subbuteo), 22nd September.
One south west over Belton, 24th September.

Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula)
Three juveniles with the Lapwing flock in the MoD field at Corton, 20th and 21st September.

BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER (Tryngites subruficollis)
One juvenile with Lapwings, and other waders, in the MoD field at Corton, 20th September. A much admired bird, which locally had been long predicted to occur eventually in this particular field. For an account of the finding of this bird click here.

Ruff (Philomachus pugnax)
One juvenile still present with Lapwings in the MoD field at Corton, until 21st September at least.

Pomarine Skua (Stercorarius pomarinus)
One south past Ness Point, 24th September.

Arctic Skua (Stercorarius parasiticus)
One north past Ness Point, 24th September.
One south past Corton, 24th September.

Black Tern (Chlidonias niger)
One in the Links Road Car Park, 22nd September.

Little Owl (Athene noctua)
One at Stirrups Lane entrance to the disused railway track at Corton, 24th September.
As far as we know this is the first recorded in this particular area.

Common Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus)
One at Corton, 19th September.
Two at Corton, 24th September.

Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe)
Two on  Lowestoft North Denes, 23rd September.
Five on Lowestoft North Denes, 24th September.

Redwing (Turdus iliacus)
24 flew in at Corton, 22nd September.

Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus)
One in Kirkley Cemetery, 21st September.

Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio)
One juvenile on the North Denes Camp Site, 21st and 22nd September, ranging between the Links Road Car Park and the slope below Gunton Cliff. It may not have travelled far as its flight was rather laboured as if it had only very recently fledged.
 

WEEK ENDING 17 SEPTEMBER 2000

Dark-bellied Brent Goose (Branta bernicla)
Ten south past Ness Point, 15th September.

Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)
190 in the MoD field at field at Corton, 17th September.

Ruff (Philomachus pugnax)
One juvenile with Lapwings in the MoD field at Corton, 17th September.

Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus)
Three adults with other gulls on the roof of the B&Q superstore, on Peto Way, in central Lowestoft 17th September.
Two adults and one first winter Lowestoft north Denes and Beach 17th September.
One of the adults bore a white plastic ring with the code 21N, a Dutch bird ringed as a nestling on 2nd June 1997, it was first noted in Lowestoft about three months later on 19th September 1997 and has returned to winter in Lowestoft every winter since then.

Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)
A juvenile was just north of the old sewage works at Corton on the 17th September.

RICHARD'S PIPIT (Anthus richardi)
One discovered  by Robert Holmes and Andrew Easton on the North Denes at Lowestoft, just opposite the Lighthouse Cafe, at 09:15 on the 17th September inevitably delayed breakfast plans for several hours. The bird often performed well for it's crowd of admirers throughout the day, sometimes perched in full view on the sea wall.
At least twice it flew north to the nearby North Denes Camp Site and was still present there at 17:00 at least.

Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra)
One at Corton, 15th September.
Three Lowestoft North Denes, 17th September.

Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe)
One at Corton, 15th September.
Two on  Lowestoft North Denes, 17th September.

Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)
One at Fisher Row, Oulton Broad, 15th September.

Clouded Yellow Butterfly (Colias croceus)
At least two around the North Denes and Camp Site, 17th September.
 

WEEK ENDING 10 SEPTEMBER 2000

Dottier (Charadrius morinellus)
The juvenile remained in the ploughed field immediately inland of the old MoD site until at least the 6th September.
Just a few yards south of where one appeared on 21st September 1996.

Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis)
One adult, North Beach, Lowestoft, 7th September.

Roseate Tern (Sterna dougalli)
One perched on groynes at North Beach, Lowestoft, 7th September.

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor)
One visiting a bird feeder in Harrington Avenue regularly since 28th August. Once quite common in the town, it is now an extremely scarce bird.
 

WEEK ENDING 03 SEPTEMBER 2000

Sooty Shearwater (Puffinus griseus)
Two flew north early morning at Corton, 3rd September.

Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus)
One flew north early morning at Corton, 3rd September.

Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus)
One in MoD field at Corton, with Dotterel and Golden Plovers, 3rd September.
One flew north, Corton, 3rd September.

Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta)
One flew north close inshore at Corton mid afternoon 3rd September.

Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria)
Two separate individuals heading north past Corton, 3rd September. One then headed inland, where it joined the Dotterel and its accompanying Golden Plover.

Dotterel (Charadrius morinellus)
A very colourful juvenile in the ploughed field immediately inland of the old MoD site on 3rd September. It was found by a birder from Kent staying at the nearby holiday park. It was accompanied initially by one Golden Plover, but was later joined by a second, both of which later departed to the north.

Eleven, Ness Point, 2nd September.

One adult, North Beach, Lowestoft, 2nd September.

One in field by MoD site at Corton, 3rd September.

Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra)
Five Lowestoft North Denes, 2nd September.
Four between Corton and Hopton, 3rd September.

Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe)
Six on Lowestoft North Denes, 2nd September.
Six between Corton and Hopton, 2nd and 3rd September.

Garden Warbler (Sylvia borin)
One, Corton disused railway line, 3rd September.

Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus)
One Sparrows Nest Park, 3rd September.

Clouded Yellow Butterfly (Colias croceus)
After one seen near Corton Church last week, two were noted on 28th August; one just north of Warrenhouse Wood and the other on Corton disused railway line.

WEEK ENDING 27 AUGUST 2000

Following a quiet few weeks it finally appears that a few migrants are now firmly on the move, thought the Bank Holiday weekend proved disappointing locally. Lets hope for better luck in September.

In addition to the more noteworthy birds noted below offshore passage on the 26th August included several flocks each of  Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra), Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) and Common Terns (Sterna hirundo); two Gannets (Morus bassanus), a Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), two Grey Plovers (Pluvialis squatarola) and a Knot (Calidris canutus).

Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima)
One juvenile at  Ness Point, 23rd August, was the first returning bird of the autumn.

Dunlin (Calidris alpina)
One, Ness Point, 23rd August.

Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres)
Four adults in fading summer plumage, Ness Point, 23rd August.

Arctic Skua (Stercorarius parasiticus)
Three south at Ness Point, 26th August.
Four south at Corton, 26th August.

Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus)
Two adults, Ness Point, 21st August.
One juvenile moulting to first winter, bearing a metal ring on its left leg, at Barnards Meadow, 26th August.

35, Ness Point, 21st August.

Black Tern (Chlidonias niger)
One south past Ness Point, 26th August.

Two, Corton, 22nd August.

WEEK ENDING 13 AUGUST 2000

Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus)
One south past Ness Point, Lowestoft, 12th August.

Arctic Skua (Stercorarius parasiticus)
Three north past Ness Point, Lowestoft, 9th August.

Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus)
Three moulting adults with other gulls on the roof of the B&Q superstore, on Peto Way, in central Lowestoft 13th August. This is a fairly regular daytime roost site.

Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)
One, Gunton Drive, off Corton Road, Lowestoft, 13th August. One was also present at Minsmere RSPB reserve to the south.

Slightly farther afield, at Winterton Dunes nature reserve, north of Great Yarmouth, in Norfolk there were still at least two male Red-veined Darter dragonflies (Sympetrum fonscolombei) present at the new Natterjack Toad pool on 12th August.
Also present there were several Common Darters (S. striolatum), two male Emperor Dragonflies (Anax imperator) and at least three male Common Hawkers (Aeshna juncea). The latter is very rare in East Anglia, being totally absent from Suffolk, but does breed at Winterton itself.
The warden asks that people visiting watch out that they don't step on the Natterjack Toadlets that may still be lurking in the vegetation around the pool itself.
 

WEEK ENDING 06 AUGUST 2000

Mediterranean Gull (Larus melanocephalus)
One juvenile scavenging scraps amongst the tourists on Lowestoft South Beach, 5th August.
Most summers there are usually a couple of summer plumaged adults around, at least one has been present this summer.
 

WEEK ENDING 30 JULY 2000

Little Egret (Egretta garzetta)
One, Benacre Broad, July 29th.

Black Swan (Cygnus atratus)
One, Benacre Broad, July 29th.

Australian Shelduck (Tadorna tadornoides)
One male added a splash of colour at Benacre Broad, July 29th.

Knot (Calidris canutus)
One summer plumaged bird feeding at Ness Point, July 30th.

Little Gull (Larus minutus)
Small numbers passing Ness Point, Lowestoft most days.
97, Benacre Broad, July 29th.

Chinese Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis)
Female with one fawn feeding and chasing along reedbed edge at Benacre Broad, mid morning July 29th.
 

WEEK ENDING 23 JULY 2000

Eagle/Vulture species.
A large raptor reported as either an eagle or a vulture was seen flying in from the sea at Ness Point, Lowestoft, 18th July.
It was subsequently seen in the Barnby Broad/ Castle Marshes area between Oulton Broad and Beccles on 19th July.

One north past Ness Point, 20th July.

Raven (Corvus corax)
One reported flying south west over Oulton, 19th July was part of a large passage of Corvids, particularly Jackdaws.
 

WEEK ENDING 09 JULY 2000

Common Tern (Sterna hirundo)
The colony nesting on roofs along Lake Lothing have reared at least eight young this year. Click here for photo.
 
 

WEEK ENDING 02 JULY 2000

Marsh Warbler (Acrocephalus palustris)
One singing, Fisher Row, Oulton Broad, 26th to 27th June at least.

Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus)
Castle Farm Marshes, Burgh Castle, group of 6-8 juveniles, plus a pair taking food to another section of reeds.
