MARBLED TEAL Marmaronetta angustirostris
A quick check for Garganey at Leathes Ham on the 27th produced a surprise in the form of an unringed juvenile Marbled Teal, it remained there at dusk. It is presumably the same individual of unknown origin seen at Cantley Sugar Beet factory
from 19th to 21st August and at Dingle Marshes, Dunwich on the 24th.

The Bank Holiday Monday evening firework display at nearby Oulton Broad resulted in a mass clear out of a large proportion of the wildfowl overnight, and the Marbled Teal was subsequently relocated at Minsmere RSPB on the morning of the 28th where it remained until the evening.

After a day out at Minsmere it was back at Leathes Ham on the evening of the 29th, still present on the 30th and 31st, though often out of view on the large island.

The biggest surprise was that it was one of the few unringed ducks there. Some of the Garganey, Wigeon and Shoveler were adorned with colour rings. Many ducks are captive reared for shooting and are released at Flixton gravel pits inland along the Waveney valley, it seems Garganey are now included.
