PINK-FOOTED GOOSE
Anser brachyrhynchus

The moulting adult found with Greylag Geese on Oulton Broad on June 30th was still present on the 1st. The bill pattern is very similar to that of the individual that summered in the area in 2005 so seems likely to be the same bird.

HOBBY Falco subbuteo
Two were hunting over the sea off Lowestoft South Beach on the 27th. One caught a swift, but let it go when a Herring Gull went after it!
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 31st.



WATER RAIL Rallus aquaticus
At least one was calling from riverside reeds at Waveney Forest on the 22nd.



COMMON CRANE Grus grus
Four flew north-eastwards high over Oulton Village just after midday on the 31st.

One of a group of four that flew south past Ness Point on the evening of the 26th had a brown rump and back, was darker breasted and the underwing coverts were noticeably duller than the accompanying Whimbrel. Characteristics normally associated with the American race hudsonicus or Asian race variegatus.

One flew south past Ness Point on the evening of the 6th.
Two flew north past Ness Point on the 13th.
Four flew north past Ness Point on the 24th.
One flew north past Ness Point on the 26th.
Four were off Lowestoft North Beach on the 28th.

Kessingland - 4th (1 adult S), 7th (1 ad. S), 10th (1 2nd sum. N), 13th (1 2nd sum N), 14th (1 2nd sum N), 15th (1 2nd sum S), 28th (1 N).
One summer plumaged bird was at Links Road car park on the 24th.
Lowestoft South Beach - 27th (4, 2 adults + 2 2nd summers).
Links Road car park - 28th (3, 2 adults + 2nd summer).

Two flew south past Ness Point on the 7th.

YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Larus michahellis
The regular individual that has been returning since 1997 was once again along Lowestoft North Beach on the 17th (the same first date as in 2005, after a late arrival on the 30th last summer). It is at least 15 years old now as it was a full adult at least four years old when first noted 11 years ago!

STOCK DOVE Columba oenas
Belton Marshes - 17th (17).



TURTLE DOVE Streptopelia turtur
One was at Belton Marshes on the 12th.



CUCKOO Cuculus canorus
One was still singing at Lound on the 5th, perhaps the rain weather has delayed their leaving.
Two were seen along the River Waveney between Oulton Broad and Beccles on the 8th.



GREEN WOODPECKER Picus viridis
An adult and two juveniles were at Links Road on the 8th.



YELLOW WAGTAIL Motacilla flava
One was seen at Kessingland on the 12th and 23rd.
Two were on a manure heap at Gisleham on the 14th.
Two were along the south wall at Breydon on the 22nd.



PIED WAGTAIL Motacilla alba yarrelli
This species seems to have had a good breeding season with widespread reports groups of adults and young including 23 on the Denes Oval on the 17th.



BLACK REDSTART Phoenicurus ochruros
One young male was singing at Hamilton Dock on the 15th.
One was along the south Esplanade at Lowestoft on the 21st.

A full grown juvenile was around Hamilton Dock on the evenings of the 18th and 19th.

Lound water works - 4th (1).

Late migrants were singing in coastal bushes near the Claremont Pier, Lowestoft on the 7th; in gardens below Lowestoft Lighthouse on the 8th and at Gunton Warren on the 12th-13th.

Large numbers of Large White butterflies were seen arriving in off the sea at Lowestoft North Denes on the 7th.

On the 10th a single Hummingbird Hawk-moth was seen near the town centre in Beccles.
