One flew south past Ness Point on the 23rd.

GREAT CRESTED GREBE

One well grown juvenile was on Leathes Ham on the 10th to 17th.

Ness Point - 1st (2 N, 1 S), 2nd (3 N), 8th (1 S), 21st (1 S).
Lowestoft North Beach - 5th (1 N, 1 S), 7th (18 N), 9th (7 N), 11th (18 N), 15th (4 N, 4 S), 30th (2 N).
Kessingland - 7th (3 N), 8th (5 N), 10th (1 N, 1 S), 12th (23 N), 13th (8 N).



MANX SHEARWATER Puffinus puffinus
One flew north past Kessingland at 17:50 on the 4th.
Singletons flew north past Lowestoft North Beach at 18:05, no doubt the Kessingland bird above, and at 18:50 on the 4th.
One flew south past Lowestoft North Beach on the afternoon of the 9th.
Two flew south past Lowestoft North Beach on the afternoon of the 10th.
Two flew north past Lowestoft North Beach on the morning of the 11th.
Two flew past Ness Point on the 18th, one north and one south.
One flew north past Kessingland on the 22nd.
One flew north past Kessingland on the 23rd.
One flew north past Kessingland on the 24th.

A total of 12 have been seen so far this month.

Ness Point - 3rd (3 N), 4th (1 N), 5th (1 N), 6th (1 N), 8th (5 N), 9th (2 N), 10th (10 S), 27th (1 N), 28th (2 N), 29th (1 N).
Lowestoft North Beach - 5th (2 N), 7th (2 N), 9th (1 N), 11th (14 N), 12th (1 N), 15th (27 N), 18th (2 N), 30th (2 N).
Kessingland - 7th (2 N), 15th (2 N), 18th (1 N), 19th (3 N), 29th (1 N).

A total of 87 were seen during the month.



BALEARIC SHEARWATER Puffinus mauretanicus
One flew north past Lowestoft North Beach at 18:40 on the 4th.
One flew north past Lowestoft North Beach on the 11th, accompanied by two Sooty Shearwaters.

One, probably another Sooty, was seen heading north past Ness Point on the 27th.



LEACH'S STORM PETREL

One flew north past Ness Point on the 10th.

One flew north over Lowestoft North Denes on the 27th.



SPOONBILL
Platalea leucorodia
The seven birds at the east end of Breydon Water were staying stubbornly north of the border on the 4th. One was on the north side on the 9th.

Three were on Oulton Broad on the 25th. ]



PINK-FOOTED GOOSE Anser brachyrhynchus
48 flew north over Breydon Water on the afternoon of the 30th.

PINTAIL
Anas acuta
One female was on Leathes Ham on the 1st before flying off west along Lake Lothing.
Nine arrived in off the sea on the 10th and flew inland high to the north west.
Lowestoft North Beach - 10th (9 in off the sea then flew high north west inland), 11th (4 N), 27th (8 N).
Corton - 11th (10 N).
Leathes Ham - 12th (2 both ringed), 13th (2), 15th (1), 16th (3), 28th (1).
Kessingland - 24th (2 S).



MALLARD
Anas platyrhynchos
Oulton Broad - 27th (20 flew east, probably heading for Leathes Ham).

Ness Point - 2nd (2 N), 18th (1 N), 28th (52 S).

GARGANEY
Anas querquedula
Four were at Leathes Ham on the 1st, 2nd and 9th, at least two of them colour ringed, apparently captive reared for shooting.
Six were at Leathes Ham on the evening of the 12th, at least one ringed, though no doubt all of them are rear and release birds.
At least five were at Leathes Ham on the 13th, 15th, 20th and 24th.
The count of dodgy Garganey at Leathes Ham reached a new high of seven on the evening of the 16th.
At least two were still at Leathes Ham on the 30th.

It remains to be seen if, being captive bred, they actually migrate.

Leathes Ham - 1st (7), 2nd (9), 13th (48), 16th (75).
Oulton Broad - 27th (15 flew east, probably heading for Leathes Ham).
Kessingland - 23rd (3 S).

MARBLED TEAL Marmaronetta angustirostris
The unringed juvenile that first appeared on Leathes Ham on the 27th August was present to the 13th. Present again on the 30th
. It could be surprisingly elusive at times though.



POCHARD Aythya ferina
Leathes Ham - 15th (2), 16th (4), 30th (2).
Ness Point - 28th (2 N).



TUFTED DUCK Aythya fuligula
Leathes Ham - 1st (3), 13th (1), 17th (2), 28th (5), 30th (7).
Ness Point - 17th (2 S).
Kessingland - 18th (1 N).



SCAUP Aythya marila
One female was at Leathes Ham on the 16th and 17th. The legs were not seen, but hopefully it's a wild bird decoyed in by the profusion of waterfowl present rather than a rear and release bird.



COMMON EIDER Somateria mollissima
One male flew south past Ness Point on the 17th.
33 were on the sea of Kessingland on the 19th.
Five flew north past Ness Point on the 28th.

RED-BREASTED MERGANSER
Mergus serrator
One flew north past Kessingland on the 27th.



MARSH HARRIER
Circus aeruginosus
One was seen along Marsh Lane, Worlingham on the 25th.



SPARROWHAWK
Accipiter nisus
A juvenile was watched battling against the wind as it arrived in off the sea at Ness Point towards sunset on the 26th. It was being easily overtaken by pipits also migrating in. As it neared the coast several gulls started to mob it, but it made it safely to the shore.



COMMON BUZZARD
Buteo buteo
One drifted westwards over Oulton Broad on the 15th.



OSPREY
Pandion haliaetus
One was seen flying east along the River Waveney at Worlingham on the 1st.

A juvenile was at Lound Waterworks from the 12th to 16th. It can be elusive at times and does visit the adjacent Fritton Lake area as well.
For some it brings back fond memories of 1983 when at least one very obliging individual frequented the same area from 9th September to 4th October. That was the last time one seems to have made a prolonged stay in our area; 24 years is a long time to wait for a repeat performance!

One arrived in off the sea at Ness Point on the 28th.

Three were at Carlton Marshes on the 1st.
Kessingland - 4th (1 S), 5th (1 S), 30th (1 N).
Mutford - 11th (1).
Lound Waterworks - 13th (5), 16th (2).
Ashby - 16th (3).
Ness Point - On the 18th one arrived in off the sea at 06:50; it took ages to reach the coast as it was too busy plucking and eating the bird it was already carrying!
Gunton - 17th (1 over the church).
Corton - 21st (1).
Arnolds Walk - 27th (1 S).



PEREGRINE Falco peregrinus
On the 30th one that was initially over the north east corner of Breydon Water made short work of flying the length of Breydon Water before stooping down into fields at Burgh Castle Marshes.

Ness Point - 2nd (1 S), 3rd (3 N), 4th (9 N, 4 S).
Lowestoft North Beach - 7th (1 N), 11th (1 N, 3 S).

GOLDEN PLOVER Pluvialis apricaria
Three flew north past Lowestoft North Beach on the 4th.
Lowestoft North Beach - 11th (1 N).
Kessingland sewage works - 13th (1).
Two were in a stubble field at Gunton on the 29th.



GREY PLOVER Pluvialis squatarola
Ness Point - 18th (2 S), 19th (14 S), 17th (1 S).
Lowestoft North Beach - 5th (1 N, 1 S), 11th (2 N), 27th (1 N).
Kessingland - 24th (1 S), 28th (1 N), 29th (3 N).

Calidris canutus
Breydon South Flats - 2nd (20), 9th (35), 30th (20).

LITTLE STINT

One was along the South Flats at Breydon Water on the 30th.




WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER Calidris fuscicollis
One adult has been seen on and off at the eastern end of Breydon Water from the 1st to the 8th, sometimes along the south flats.

CURLEW SANDPIPER Calidris ferruginea
Six juveniles were along the South Flats at Breydon Water on the 9th.
One was on the South Flats at Breydon Water on the 30th.



PURPLE SANDPIPER
Calidris maritima

The first returning bird of the autumn was with Turnstones on rocks along Lowestoft North Beach on the 14th and 19th; and at the Point on the 16th.

Ness Point - 3rd (4 N), 4th (14 N, 18 S), 18th (2 N), 28th (4 N).

COMMON SNIPE
Gallinago gallinago
Three arrived in off the sea at Kessingland on the 19th.
Single birds were flushed from Lowestoft North Denes on the 26th and 27th.
One was flushed at Corton on the 27th.
One flew north past Kessingland on the 28th.

BAR-TAILED GODWIT Limosa lapponica
Breydon South Flats - 2nd (1), 4th (1 N), 9th (2), 30th (3).
Lowestoft North Beach - 11th (3 N), 27th (3 N).

WHIMBREL
Numenius phaeopus
Kessingland - 8th (1 S), 15th (1 N).



CURLEW Numenius arquata
One flew over Lound Waterworks on the 13th.
One flew north past Ness Point on the 29th.
Two were in fields along Jay Lane, Lound on the 30th.

REDSHANK Tringa totanus
One flew south past Kessingland on the 23rd.



TURNSTONE Arenaria interpres
Kessingland - 5th (12 N), 6th (5 N), 27th (11 N).
Lowestoft North Beach - 19th (12), 25th (12).



POMARINE SKUA Stercorarius pomarinus
Single birds flew north past Kessingland on the 2nd, 8th and 11th, and one was lingering offshore there on the 19th.
One flew north past Ness Point on the 15th.

Two juveniles flew north past Lowestoft North Beach on the 15th.
One was on the sea close to the beach off Kessingland on the 16th.
A juvenile was lingering off Lowestoft North Beach on the evening of the 17th.
One flew south off Kessingland on the 26th.

SABINE'S GULL Larus sabini
One juvenile flew south past Ness Point on the 15th.



YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Larus michahellis
The regular adult, still moulting well, was along Lowestoft North Beach up to the 25th at least. On the 26th it, and several other large gulls, were on the Denes Oval rather than trying to sit on the groynes in the rough weather.

One was feeding in fields adjacent to Kessingland sewage works on the 13th.

One was seen feeding offshore at Ness Point on the 17th before it drifted off south.



GUILLEMOT Uria aalge

One juvenile was swimming south just offshore along Lowestoft North Beach on the 9th.

A couple of freshly dead corpses were on Lowestoft North Beach on the 27th.

During the afternoon of the 18th 436 were counted flying north of Lowestoft North Beach in a 90 minute period. By early evening the wind had dropped and the passage had ceased completely. Subsequently large numbers of auks have been seen settled on the sea off here.

One was flushed from a pile of rubble in a garden at Mutford on the 13th.

One was being mobbed in "Flycatcher Alley" behind the Denes Oval on the 29th.

One was seen in Gorleston on the 27th.



SHORT-EARED OWL Asio flammeus
One was over the Kessingland Levels on the 30th.



KINGFISHER Alcedo atthis
Two were at Leathes Ham on the 1st, 12th and 15th, with at least one there on the 2nd, 13th and 30th.
Two were at Lound Waterworks on the 13th.
Two were at Oulton Broad on the 14th, with one there on the 15th and 27th.
One was in Hamilton Dock on the 27th.

At Ness Point on the 2nd a distant speck seen heading in from out to sea low over the waves eventually turned out to be a Kingfisher as it came closer. After reaching the North Beach it was heard calling once as it flew south along the coast below the sea wall. Not an everyday sight!

GREAT GREY SHRIKE
Lanius excubitor

One was along the disused railtrack at Corton on the afternoon of the 28th before moving off inland.
One was found on the old caravan site on Lowestoft North Denes early on the morning of the 29th, it then flew to the Denes Oval before disappearing to the north shortly afterwards.
There was quite an influx of this species along the east coast of the UK on these two dates.

Two were in Corton Wood on the 29th.

Several flew north over Lowestoft North Denes amongst mixed flocks with Goldfinches on the 30th.

GREY SQUIRREL

One was at Ness Point on the 21st. It arrived via the Birds Eye car park and finding no trees at the point and also trying to avoid the attentions of curious gulls in headed back north along the seawall shortly afterwards.
The day before one was seen at dusk perched on top of the washing line pole in a garden in Stevens Street, Lowestoft. Quite probably chased there by the local cats, it left as darkness fell.
