Edge Hill station was once surrounded by a massive complex of railway sidings, yards, sheds, tunnels and intersections. Close to the current station is the site of the original terminus of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The photo on the right shows the station as it was before the 200 Year celebrations of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, for which the station was stripped back to the original building with a number of canopies and extensions being removed.

As well as being on Mersey Rail's "City Line", many trains travelling between Liverpool Lime Street and many cities throughout the UK pass through the station since the closure of Liverpool's other mainline termini in the 1980s.

Before the construction of Lime Street Station, the terminus of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway had been Crown Street Station. The original cutting from Edge Hill, which still shows track in place, leading to the site of Crown Street Station can be seen in the photo on the left. Edge Hill station is beyond the Tunnel Road bridge shown in the photo. Out of the picture and left of the scene are the tunnels and cuttings from Edge Hill to Lime Street station.
