The name Bryan is thought to originate from "Bryan, king of Munster and all Ireland" though there is also "Brien" (used in Normandy) and a Norman derivation. The name has been in use all over Ireland and England for many centuries and in earlier times often associated with landed gentry and nobility. One early record in England is Wyde Bryan, Devenshire in 1273. The name "Bryant" is a relatively recent variation existing in England.
