Why?

Why would you be interested in one of our portraits?  Perhaps you are a member of a Society dedicated to a famous person and you want that person's image for some purpose.  You could be a member of a profession wanting something appropriate as a wall-hanging for a  waiting room or for your office.

Portrait: Russell, First Earl of Bedford

Theatrical Portrait: Mrs Francis Abington

Maybe you are doing genealogical research and you want images of people with a particular surname.  Are you writing a book or preparing a presentation and you really need relevant illustrations? Or are you crazy about the theatre and its history?  It could just be out of hero worship. There are a range of reasons.

Theatrical Portrait: Mr Phelps as Macbeth
Portrait: Duchess D'Angouleme

We are building up a library of portraits. To help you find something appropriate to you we have categorised them and we have listed the names  from available portraits alphabetically. See the pages that follow.

In our current portrait feature we focus on Spy prints. See our Archives for a Theatrical feature.

Engravings

Engravings were the forerunners of photographs and were the only form of illustration used until the development of photographic techniques during the last century. Wood block and wood engravings were the first to be used, followed by copper and steel engravings, aquatints and lithographs and variations such as stipple and mezzotint. There was considerable overlapping of these processes and in the mid 19th century all types were being used.

Engravings were used for book illustrations, newspaper pictures, portraits, topographical views, letter heads, instruction manuals etc. They are now becoming increasingly scarce and very collectable for wall decorations, etc. and we carry large stocks of these items.

Example
