His Majesty Pomare, King of Tahiti

This copper/stipple engraving is the work of Freeman (click on it to see it enlarged). It was published in 1821 by F. Westley, Stationer's Court, London.

The legend on the portrait is "His Majesty Pomarre, King of Taheite". This is probably Pomare II, who fled the islands of Tahiti with British missionaries in 1803 after an unsuccessful attempt at colonisation. He returned with them in 1812 having embraced Protestantism. He regained power in 1815 and died in 1824.

The portrait is sold ready to frame, price £30.
