1.   Carpet Manufacture – Bound in Carpet

BRADBURY (Fred).  Carpet Manufacture.  301pp + 19pp of adverts., 3 coloured plates and other illustrations, 243 text illustrations, author’s signed presentation copy.  Specially bound in a beautifully patterned tapestry type carpet. Printed for the Author, Halifax, 1904.  *Somewhat uncommon – especially in a binding such as this.   

2.   Woollen  Industry – Bound in Donegal Tweed

LIPSON, E.  The History of the Woollen and Worsted Industries.  First Edition, 273pp, map and frontispiece. Specially bound in Donegal Tweed (it looks so attractive that it is surprising that more books are not bound in this fashion), very good, A & C Black, London, 1921.

AYERST, David.  Guardian, Biography of a Newspaper.  First Edition, 702pp, illustrated. Specially bound in a copy of the Guardian Newspaper (Newspaper laid on boards – a strong attractive binding – don’t worry it will not fall to pieces) very good, Collins, London, 1971.

MALCOLM, Charles A.  The History of the British Linen Bank.  First Edition, 253pp, illustrated. Specially bound in White Linen, very good, title printed in red and black, privately printed, Constable, Edinburgh, 1950. 

10.  African Art – Bound in Morocco with Woven Inlays

Arts of West Africa (Excluding Music).  First Edition, x + 101pp, 32 plates showing numerous examples of African Art, specially bound in polished red morocco, patterned boards with inlays woven in, a traditional pattern and a contemporary binding, very good, London, 1935.  *A special binding similar in workmanship to the weaving carried out in the Bamenda region of the Cameroons.  This item is not a Conway binding.

MORRIS, F.H.  Paper and Paper Making.  First Edition, xiv + 353pp.  Specially bound in handmade paper, very good, Oxford University Press, London, 1952.  *The hand made paper – of an attractive ‘Japanese’ style has been relaid on boards to make an attractive, serviceable and hardwearing binding of unusual design.

HEYERDAHL, Thor.  The Ra Expeditions.  First English Edition, 334pp, fine illustrations including colour plates. Specially bound in Papyrus, very good, Allen & Unwin, London, 1971.  *The pioneering expeditions by the author made in boats constructed from papyrus reeds.

NEWHOUSE, Joan.  Reindeer are Wild Too.  First Edition, 174pp, well illustrated. Specially bound in Reindeer Skin which was recovered from a two hundred year old wreck on the sea bed off the Channel Islands a few years ago, very good, hide spine and boards, John Murray, London, 1952.

DAVY, Sir Humphrey.  Salmonia: or days of Fly Fishing…. with some account of the Habits of fishes belonging to the Census Salmon.  Third Edition, xi + 335pp, engravings, some slight foxing. Specially bound in salmon skin, very good, John Murray, London, 1832.  *A most unusual binding and would make a most unusual gift for a salmon fisher.
