Tide predictions for Lowestoft


A large increase in the numbers of Terns offshore was noted from the 17th July as family parties head south. Numbers of Skuas accompanying them increased at the same time.

A Roseate Tern was at Lowestoft North Beach on the 19th, amongst large numbers of Sandwich and Common Terns.

The Dutch colour ringed Turnstone than spent last winter in Lowestoft was back along the North Beach on the 18th.

A juvenile was at Leathes Ham on the 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 19th, 21st and 27th at least, keeping the regular Grey Heron company.

A juvenile was at Leathes Ham on the 20th.



CANADA GOOSE
Branta canadensis

One was at Oulton Broad on the 19th.
The pair at Leathes Ham still have four young.



EGYPTIAN GOOSE Alopochen egyptiacus

A leucistic individual was at Oulton Broad on the 19th.
Both broods of young Egyptian Geese hatched at Leathes Ham this year disappeared soon after. In contrast the Mute Swan and Canada Goose pairs still have all their young.

One was hovering hopefully over gardens in Jacobs Street in central Lowestoft on the 18th. Perhaps a youngster who hasn't worked out what the best hunting sites are yet?



HOBBY Falco subbuteo

One flew north at Kessingland on the 2nd.
One flew eastwards over the rooftops at Trafalgar Street in central Lowestoft on the 9th, heading towards Lowestoft town centre.
One flew north along Lowestoft South Beach on the 21st.
One was seen at Barnby on the 22nd.
One was seen at Carlton Marshes on the 22nd.
One was at Lound Waterworks on the 27th.



PEREGRINE
Falco peregrinus

One flew south-westwards at Barsham Drain on the 1st.



GREY PARTRIDGE
Perdix perdix

One at Barsham Drain on the 1st was the first seen there for a while.



QUAIL

A very tame adult Quail was seen and videod in a garden in Hopton on the 17th. Its very tame nature suggests it may possibly have escaped from an aviary.

One flew over Carlton Marshes on the 24th.

One was at Leathes Ham on the 15th with three there on the 26th, two still on the 27th, with one on the 29th.

Lowestoft North Beach - 15th (1), 18th (2), 19th (3), 20th (3), 24th (1 on the groynes), 25th (6 all unringed), 26th (7 all unringed), 27th (11 including the ringed bird), 29th (14), 31st (19 including the ringed bird).
Kessingland - 18th (6 S), 22nd (1 S), 27th (6 S), 29th (2 S), 30th (7 S), 31st (3 S).
Ness Point - 21st (3 all unringed).

The Dutch colour ringed/flagged bird that spent last winter in Lowestoft was back along the North Beach on the 18th to 20th, and numbers of birds returning for the winter seem to be increasing almost daily.

Ness Point - 21st (4 lingering offshore).

The appearance of increased numbers of Terns offshore on the 17th and 18th also saw an increase in Skuas accompanying them.

Single birds flew north past Kessingland on the 18th and 22nd.

One was flycatching for ants, with other gulls and terns, over Oulton Broad on the 26th, with it or another over there on the 31st.

YELLOW-LEGGED GULL Larus michahellis
The regular individual that has been returning since 1997 was once again along Lowestoft North Beach on the 10th to the 19th at least (a week earlier than noted last summer). It was also on the Denes Oval on the 18th.
It is at least 16 years old now as it was a full adult, at least four years old, when first noted 12 years ago!

A noisy individual of this south-eastern Australian parakeet was on the loose in Kessingland on the 25th

An unidentified parakeet also flew over Oulton Broad on the 23rd and again on the 31st.

Individuals were still to be heard calling at Barsham Drain and the Kessingland Levels on the 1st.
One was seen at Barnby on the 22nd.

NON-BIRD NEWS

A Hummingbird Hawk-moth in a Barnby garden on the 10th is the first we've heard of in this area this year. White Admirals were on the wing at North Cove nature reserve on the 4th, and a White Admiral was also seen at Belton Common on the 25th..

A Privet Hawk-moth was seen at Beccles Common Lane on the 16th.
