A first Winter that spent most of the day around Benacre Pits and Broad on the 11th was also seen on the sea to the north of the Sluice.

The Benacre bird flew north past Kessingland on the 13th and was seen later the same day drifting north on the sea past Ness Point, then it was seen off Gunton where it later flew north towards Hopton.

On the 15th it was scavenging around the fish market at Hamilton Dock early morning, then at 9:15 it was seen of Kessingland following Lowestoft fishing vessel LT446 south. It seems fairly certain then that it was this bird that was seen off Walberswick and Dunwich later that afternoon.

On the 17th to 29th it was again in Hamilton and Waveney Docks (click on the link for more details about Hamilton and Waveney Docks). It appears to roost here as well as it was on the fish market roof at 22:30 on the 24th at least.

When it disappears into Waveney Dock it is best viewed from the top floors of the multi-storey car park opposite (but you will have to pay if you take your car in).

There was no sign of it on the 30th, but a first winter was seen at Minsmere and Sizewell that day, so it may have moved on.

13 past Ness Point on the 9th was a little way behind the day tally for the Farne Islands in Northumberland of a staggering 18,731

The 10th proved very good with 205 seen during the day off Ness Point, the largest single flock being eight. One bird followed a flock of Starlings as they arrived in off the sea and continued heading inland. Later on one arrived from inland behind us before settling on the sea. One individual also landed on the rocks at Ness Point before flying off onto the sea. One individual on the 10th was still in breeding plumage.

On the 11th two individuals flew just inland and settled somewhere in the industrial units between Hamilton Road and Ness Point. Another flew inland over Gunton Warren but turned back south when it reached the trees.

A headless corpse of one was found at Lowestoft North Beach on the 29th.

One literally arrived in off the sea on the 11th; it was gradually weakening and losing height as it approached the coast and just 50 metres from shore ditched in the sea. After a couple of minutes rest it managed to make it back into the air, probably wave assisted, and this time gained height for the final short leg of it's journey.

BIRD ATLAS DIARY

November 4th

Passing through Oulton Broad so a quick stop to see if the Feral Pigeon were nesting under the bridge at Mutford Lock as usual. Indeed they were. Several nests were there, one with two young squabs, one with a single egg and several birds sitting on nests with unknown contents.

This represented a roving record so a count wasn't needed it just required noting that the species was present in that Ordnance Survey 10km square (TM59) and that it was in tetrad G in that square. As it was actually breeding there was then a code to choose to indicate what level of breeding evidence was noted. In this particular case of confirmed breeding NY for nest with young seen or heard fits the bill nicely. Winter roving records do not otherwise require a code.

Onwards to the first TTV I had chosen, TM48V at South Cove, and probably for the first time I get to use the stopwatch function on my wristwatch!

On the way there a Marsh Harrier circling over fields to the west of the A12 just north of Wrentham goes down as a roving record for tetrad TM48W as hunting raptors in flight are countable. (Birds in direct flight over without showing signs of stopping in the tetrad are ignored.) I'm fairly sure whoever chooses that tetrad as a TTV square will get Marsh Harrier on one of their timed Winter visits, but if not the presence of the species has already been noted.

First birds in my square were a flock of Rooks feeding in a field (80) closely followed by a large flock of Starlings flying in and settling to feed in the same field (500). Possibly still augmented by recently arrived migrants but they were there so had to be counted.

A few minutes up the road (and in between recording Robin, Stock Dove, Dunnock, Linnet, Carrion Crow, Woodpigeon and Pied Wagtail) Long-tailed Tits were heard calling from a very leafy hedge. Frustratingly they keep to cover thwarting attempts to count them. I'm just about to "stop the clock" to allow extra time to wait for the birds to show themselves without wasting count time when out they bounce. 13 in total with 2 Great Tits thrown in.

Moving on again and a few more Robins and Blackbirds are added to the tally. Lots of Gulls in direct flight over but seemingly not interested in stopping to feed in the fields so I have to leave them off. Eventually get single Black-headed and Common Gull in the same field.

Just before taking a footpath through a small wood a couple of Mallards (the only ones of the count it turns out) fly out of a small stream. 26 Siskin pass over calling looking like they will pass over without using the tetrad and so about to be ignored for the count, but no they turn round and settle in a pine tree. On the list they go.

The first hour flies by and it's soon time for a snack and a drink from my rucksack before starting the second hour count.

Kestrel is the first bird of the second hour, followed by Blue Tits and a Magpie. Ahead a small group of Chaffinches are milling around a garden hedge next to fields at Frostenden. As I walk along they fly up into an adjacent wood, but they keep on flying out and eventually 90 leave the hedgerow, a lot more than I expected to see, but nothing else with them though.

Four Black-headed Gulls are perched on TV aerials, which is four more than in the first hour! The second and final group of House Sparrows (5) of the day are added. A short while later a Bullfinch calling from dense cover is added and remains the only one of the day.

Single Redpolls twice fly over calling but keep going so don't make the count.

Soon the second hour is up, but I'm not back to the car yet so although the count has now stopped I'm still keeping an eye, and ear, out for "new" species.

Up ahead there are lots of birds on overhead wires next to a maize field, they prove to be mainly Chaffinches with a few Reed Buntings and a couple of Yellowhammers. All species I have already seen, and none of them are added to count as the timed period is up. Then in the next hedge up pops a very smart Tree Sparrow, then another and eventually there are at least five of them with a similar number of Reed Buntings.

They go down as a tick in the extra species column, and are definitely bird of the square, but without a count. Then a Green Woodpecker calls behind me, another tick for the extras column and finally a lone Fieldfare gets up from the field, the final extra.

42 species were recorded in total, but what was missing?

I didn't come across any Collared Doves, Moorhens or Song Thrushes but I may get them on my second Winter visit in January/February, as I'm sure they must be there.

If not someone else may send them in as Roving Records.

Good luck and have fun on your own counts/roving recording. Perhaps someone be lucky enough to pick a square with a White's Thrush wintering in it?
