Tide predictions for Lowestoft

The breeding bird survey period for the BTO Atlas began on 1st April.

A Raven being mobbed by other Crows over St.Olaves on the 30th was a surprise garden tick for one lucky observer.

A decent arrival of spring migrants took place on the 27th and 28th, including an Icterine Warbler at Corton disused railtrack, a Pied Flycatcher at Gunton, and a Red-backed Shrike at Cobholm on the 28th.

A Great White Egret put in a brief appearance at Carlton Marshes on the 16th, and probably the same bird was noted at Brampton the next day. Still no sign of a Cattle Egret yet though ....

One was seen heading south over the North Denes on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd and went inland as far as the lighthouse before returning to the coast. Possibly the same individual.

One flew north past Ness Point on the 1st.
Single birds flew north past Kessingland on the 24th, 26th, 28th and 30th.

LITTLE EGRET Egretta garzetta

One was at Castle Marshes, North Cove on the 3rd and 10th.
One was at Somerleyton Marshes on the 11th.
One flew over Beverley Close, Lowestoft on the 31st, heading in the direction of the coast.



GREAT WHITE EGRET Egretta alba

On the afternoon of the 16th one got up from Sprats Water at Carlton Marshes and flew off northwards.



GREY HERON Ardea cinerea

One was at Leathes Ham on the 20th and 27th.



SPOONBILL Platalea leucorodia

One was on the mudflats at Burgh Castle early morning on the 3rd. It has been present in the Berney/Breydon area since the 2nd, and is colour ringed. It is a Dutch bird ringed June 2007 that subsequently wintered in Devon.

Two flew north past Kessingland on the 22nd.



PINK-FOOTED GOOSE Anser brachyrhynchus

Two flew east over Whitecast Marsh, Carlton Marshes early morning on the 6th.

CANADA GOOSE Branta canadensis

Two were at Leathes Ham on the 2nd to 8th much to the annoyance of the resident male Mute Swan, though by the 8th a truce seemed to be in effect, and on the 9th they had begun nest building!



BARNACLE GOOSE Branta leucopsis

Two were at Lound water works on the 6th and 17th.



DARK-BELLIED BRENT GOOSE
Branta (bernicla) bernicla

One flew south at Pakefield on the 12th. Not only rather late, but the wrong direction as well!

One was at Castle Marshes, North Cove on the 3rd, with two there on the 10th, and one again on the 17th.
Three were in the Barsham Drain area on the 4th.
Four were seen at Carlton Marshes on the 9th.



HEN HARRIER Circus cyaneus

A male flew across the River Waveney at Beccles Marshes on the 11th.



SPARROWHAWK Accipiter nisus

Two were at Castle Marshes, North Cove on the 10th.



COMMON BUZZARD Buteo buteo

Three were over Belton Common on the 4th.
One was at Ashby on the 11th.



ROUGH-LEGGED BUZZARD Buteo lagopus

One flew north westwards over Oulton at 11:10 on the 3rd; and presumably the same bird was circling over Oulton Broad at 13:10 on the 5th before drifting off north westwards in the direction of Oulton Marshes.

Two arrived in high off the sea at Gunton Warren at 09:30 on the 2nd. They were probably Honey Buzzards but the views were too distant to absolutely rule out pale Common Buzzards.

One was at Carlton Marshes on the 9th.
One was at Castle Marshes, North Cove on the 10th.

One was at Mutford on the 4th.
One was heard calling distantly at Kessingland sewage works on the 8th.
Two males were together on the beach at Kessingland on the 7th, perched on clumps of Marram

One trapped at Kessingland sewage works on the 21st had been ringed there on the 27th May 2005



YELLOW WAGTAIL Motacilla flava flavissima

One flew north over Lowestoft North Denes on the 2nd.
One was at the Denes Oval on the 5th, and a second bird flew south there the same day.
One was on the Denes Oval on the 8th.
Eight were on the clifftop putting green at Broadlands Sands Holiday Park between Corton and Hopton on the 8th, with two there on the 10th.

GREY-HEADED WAGTAIL Motacilla flava thunbergi

One male was at the clifftop putting green at Broadlands Sands Holiday Park between Corton and Hopton on the 8th to the 10th. The last one in the area was also found on May 8th, in 2006, a couple of fields to the north at Hopton.



GREY WAGTAIL Motacilla cinerea

A male was at Leathes Ham on the 4th and 7th, and on both occasions it was collecting large beakfulls of flies and carrying them off along Lake Lothing.
Both adults were gathering flies there on the 10th. A good breeding record for central Lowestoft.
One was at Corton Wood on the 11th.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 13th and 21st.

Two were on the Denes Oval on the 1st.
Three were on the clifftop putting green at Broadlands Sands Holiday Park between Corton and Hopton on the 8th.
One was at Ness Point on the 11th.



PIED WAGTAIL Motacilla alba yarrellii

Two were on the clifftop putting green at Broadlands Sands Holiday Park between Corton and Hopton on the 8th.

Two recently fledged young were being fed at Oulton Broad on the 20th.

A male was at the South Lowestoft industrial estate on the 13th.

Four were at the old caravan site on Lowestoft North Denes on the 28th.
One was at the Denes Oval on the 31st.

One was in a St. Olaves garden on the 21st.
One was seen in Waveney Forest, Fritton on the 22nd.
One was along Corton disused railtrack on the 28th.
One was at Kessingland sewage works on the 28th.



PIED FLYCATCHER
Ficedula hypoleuca
A female was around the Dip Farm football pitch car park at Gunton on the 28th.



RED-BACKED SHRIKE
Lanius collurio
A female was seen briefly at the Herbert Barnes Riverside Park at Cobholm along the South Wall at Breydon on the 28th.



HOODED CROW x CARRION CROW
Corvus cornix x C. corone
One hybrid was at Belton on the 4th, presumably on of the birds usually to be found at nearby Burgh Castle.



RAVEN
Corvus corax
One flew over St. Olaves, being mobbed by other Crows, at 16:30 on the 30th, heading in the direction of Herringfleet.

A flock of around 40 were seen in Waveney Forest, Fritton on the 23rd, 24th and 31st.

The warm weather on the 10th finally tempted some Damselflies out, Large Red and Variable Damselflies were noted at Herringfleet Marshes. On the 11th Damselflies, probably Red-eyed, were watched emerging at Lound Waterworks.

This newly emerged damselfly is still pumping up it's wings and abdomen. A drop of the green fluid used to inflate the wings can be seen being excreted part way along the abdomen.

Also on the 11th Hairy Dragonflies were noted at Somerleyton Marshes, Carlton Marshes and one even flew north along the tideline along Lowestoft North Beach!

A Norfolk Hawker was hunting along the rides in Waveney Forest, Fritton on the 24th, along with several Hairy Dragonflies and a Four-spotted Chaser.

Five Wall Brown butterflies were noted at Castle Marshes, North Cove on the 10th.

A Painted Lady butterfly was seen near Lowestoft Central Library on the 31st.

On the 31st 15+ Scarce Chasers were on the wing at Carlton Marshes, single Norfolk Hawker and Hairy Dragonfly, one Banded Demoiselle and several Azure, Variable and Blue-tailed Damselflies.

Four-spotted Chasers, Hairy Dragonflies and Variable and Azure Damselflies were also seen at Belton Common on the 31st.
