KILLDEER
Charadrius vociferus

What an astonishing record!!! This screamer was just reward for diligent local patch worker, Ian Smith, who hit the jackpot on the 28th. The bird was found with a small flock of Golden Plover on Fisher's Marshes, Breydon South Wall. It was present for a mere 40 minutes before departing west with Golden Plover at 12:20 before the hordes arrived, so no photos on the first day. A totally unexpected addition to the Lounge Lizard avifauna.

Much to the amazement of most it appeared in the same field early morning on the 29th. We heard just a couple of birders, including Graham Etherington, made the effort to search for it while the Lounge Lizards were living up to their name. Let's just say several pairs of dark morph inner eyelids were being reported as news broke!!! The bird stayed in the same field all day wandering no further than 25 metres.

With a bit of luck it'll stay for the weekend so those who were frustrated on Easter Monday get the opportunity to see this wonderful bird!

No sign on the 30th. Could it be the bird found in the Netherlands on April 3rd?

Another spell of cold weather and gales, and the number of Purple Sandpipers increase again, this time from 11 in mid-February to 13 on the 2nd.
Just outside our area one was feeding on the mudflats with Ringed Plovers and a Turnstone on the north side of the channel at Breydon Water on the 28th, a rather unexpected sight at this location. It was no consolation though for the lack of a Killdeer!

GLAUCOUS GULL Larus hyperboreus
A first winter was watched circling over Oulton Broad at 8:00 on the 4th, before drifting off northwards. What was probably the same bird was at Breydon Water on the 6th, but sticking firmly to the Norfolk side of the channel.

On the afternoon of the 29th both first and second winter birds were feeding at Aldeby rubbish tip, Norfolk mid-afternoon. On the off chance they would join the pre-roost flock at Oulton Broad this site was checked and sure enough the 1st winter was present at 17:35.

A probable second winter ICELAND GULL L. glaucoides was seen over Carlton Marshes, circling westwards towards Barnby, on the morning of the 12th. Unfortunately without the benefit of a pair of binoculars for a better view.

GUILLEMOT Uria aalge
On the 2nd along the North Beach at Lowestoft there were two dead birds, and one weak individual being killed by a Herring Gull. None of them were oiled, and starvation following the recent storms seems the likely cause.
One drifted south past Ness Point on the 30th, occasionally being mobbed by gulls.

Dusky Warbler ©Andrew Easton
Dusky Warbler - Kessingland - March 2005 - ©Andrew Easton

DUSKY WARBLER Phylloscopus fuscatus
There having been no sightings of the Dusky Warbler since February 26th, it was feared it may have succumbed in the cold snap. However it reappeared along the cliff face early morning on the 12th, but then proved elusive for the remainder of the day. On the 13th and 14th it ranged along the cliff face again.

On the 18th it was seen to cross the road near the bus stop and was thought to be heading for the sewage works. No sign of it on the 19th, but on the 20th it was first heard, and then seen well along the fenceline bushes at the sewage works. It then flew across the path in the direction of the coast.

It was seen again at the sewage works on the 21st. On the 22nd it was seen early morning near the bus stop, and on the 24th it was seen again at the sewage works. From the 25th until the month end it spent most of it's time along the cliff face.
