RED KITE Milvus milvus
One flew south over Flixton Decoy at 12:30 on the 2nd. On the 3rd one flew south across the estuary at Burgh Castle then continued southwards across the marshes and was shortly afterwards seen between Bradwell and Belton continuing to head southwards in the direction of Lound Waterworks. It was shortly afterwards seen going south over Blundeston.

It, or another, was seen being mobbed by a crow over fields by the A12 south of Jay Lane, Lound/Hopton on the 13th.

At 18:37 on the 18th a pale phase arctic Skua flew north about 1 kilometre from the beach at Kessingland.



GREAT SKUA

At 7:15 on the 24th the first Bonxie of the year was seen at Kessingland. It was traveling north followed in close formation by 4 Gannets." I have often seen Bonxies shadowing Gannets but never the reverse. It appeared that the Bonxie was just taking its turn in setting the pace and there was no sign animosity between any of the parties."

A first winter was flying around Lowestoft Harbour at dusk on the 8th, but disappeared to the north along with most of the other gulls soon afterwards. Presumably the same bird seen at Oulton Broad on March 29th and in the harbour on February 21st.

One very greyish brown, ringed, individual was at Kessingland sewage works on the 16th. It looked much like the eastern race type bird ringed there last February and March. It was singing like a standard Chiffchaff though.

DUSKY WARBLER Phylloscopus fuscatus
The Kessingland Dusky Warbler first seen on December 2nd 2004 was still present along the cliff above the beach up to April 18th at least, but with no sightings since we must hope it is now well underway on its long journey eastwards. Good Luck, and thanks for keeping us busy on many a winter day trying to locate you!.

Judging by the photo above, taken on April 11th, I think we can safely say its pre-breeding moult was well underway at the time!

One was at Hopton Holiday Village on the 2nd, and two were seen at Kessingland sewage works on the 4th.

One was feeding in a garden in Gunton Drive, Lowestoft on the morning of the 1st.
One or two pass through our area in most years, usually between April and May, and there was one in the same garden in 1997.
