Saltmarsh on shingle
Typical saltmarsh habitat builds up in sheltered
locations on muddy substrate. The mud falls out of suspension in the sea water
under still conditions. In Rye Bay
there are several places where sea water covers shingle in sheltered locations
and saltmarsh plants have colonised.
· On
the west bank of the river rother near the river mouth– plants include sea
heath.
· On
the east bank of the river rother near northpoint pit .
· On
the artificially flattened shingle near the river mouth,
fed by sea water via a culvert – extensive areas of glasswort and shrubby sea
blite.
· Landward
of the sea defences, west of Winchelsea
Beach – glasswort and sea aster.
Some saltmarsh plants can be found around the
margins of saline lagoons.
