Church Oakley, Hampshire

Church Oakley is a small village and a parish half a mile south of Oakley station and 5 miles west of Basingstoke. The Sandoms and Elwicks come from this village.

The 1895 Kelly's directory describes ...

The church of St. Leonard is a building of flint, with Bath stone dressings, in the perpendicular style, consisting of a chancel, nave of 2 bays and aisles, and a western tower with four pinnacles containing 6 bells : the pulpit is of alabaster and is finely chiselled: there is a lych gate: the church was rebuilt in 1869, from the designs of T. H. Wyatt esq. at a cost of about £6,000: an organ was purchased by subscription in 1874 ... There are 200 sittings.

The 1895 Kelly's directory states

The living ... held since 1887 by the Rev. Francis Glynne Hume. Mrs A. Bramston left £21 yearly for bread, meat, clothing, or other useful articles to the poor of Deane and Oakley. The Rev. A. Scott Ramsey... has a large establishment with a strong staff of masters for preparing pupils for the army, university and civil service examinations. Malshanger, the seat of Wyndham Spencer Portal esq, J. P. is seated in a well wooded park, and commands an extensive and pleasent view of the surrounding country ... Part of Oakley Park is in this parish, but the mansion is in Deane and is the seat of William Wither Bramston Beach esq. M.P. ... The soil is light loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 1,605 acres ...the population in 1891 was 313.

National School (mixed), for this parish, Deane and East Oakley, built in 1855, and enlarged in 1872, for 120 children; average attendance, 90. George A. Figgins, master.

Elementary School (mixed), for this parish, Deane and East Oakley, ... altered in 1910 to accomodate 105 children and again enlarged in 1924, for an additional 60 children; Arthur Percival Ridges, master.
