contentsAn earlier Thomas WASHER - 1792

In her article on Lewes Market, Verena Smith (1969, p. 93) explains that...

With the opening of the [new Lewis] market [in June 1792] it was necessary to appoint certain Officials, the first of these was the Collector of Tolls. John Burtensaw was chosen ...

Inevitably when rules are made there are some people ready to break them: on 16 July 1792, J. Burtenshaw reports to the commissioners that ... Thomas Washer of Chailey was discovered hawking Cherries in the borough and not selling them in the Market - there was conclusive evidence when he sold 'to the said John Burtensaw One Pound weight for which he recd. the sum of Two pence.'! ... Thomas Washer was 'not at home' so evaded justice.

This Thomas WASHER was almost certainly related to the WASHERs later living at Burnt House.
