He was living, as a lodger, with Edward AWCOCK and his family at Waterbury Castle. Edward and his son Spencer worked as brick makers.

Some of his children can be identified in the census:

  • James D (41, widowed) is living at 7 Railway Cottages, Keymer, with the PELLING family. He was working as a carpenter 'journey'. The household included another carpenter, James R LANGRIDGE (16) from Lindfield.
