Malling cutting - September 2001The view north towards Uckfield in September 2001. The bridge seen here can also be glimpsed in one of the photos in our archive gallery.
This cutting is the best preserved stretch of the abandoned 1868 approach into Lewes; almost all of the rest has been lost for good to developers, demolition contractors and landfill operations.
Not far to the south of this point, the trackbed has been completely removed to make way for parkland to the north of Lewes's Tesco supermarket.
Although not officially signposted, this piece of trackbed has long been used as a footpath by local residents. Recent local transport proposals for Lewes included proposals that could see it incorporated into a cycle route. (Grid Ref. TQ 413 113)
