High Rocks - April 2003

Located between Groombridge and Tunbridge Wells, thanks to a picturesque outcrop of sandstone rocks this became a popular destination for day trippers as far back as the 19th century. In 1907 it was finally dignified with a wooden platformed halt, which lasted -- with a short break at the start of the second world war - until 1952.

Once the railway preservationists took over, the previous double track was superfluous to their requirements and was gradually dismantled.

Ironically, this was at the same time that millions of pounds were being spent on the parallel A26 at Eridge in a doomed attempt to accommodate mushrooming road traffic. (Grid Ref. TQ 559 384)
