Lewes station - April 2003A few metres away from the site of the former junction with the coastal routes, the most southerly visible remains of the closed section to Uckfield can be found in what is now a popular local nature reserve.
After diverging from the electrified lines, the route curved northwards, climbing on an embankment towards the now demolished Cliffe viaduct. Although parts of the embankment itself have also been removed, a substantial section has been left as a raised nature trail.
The large tree on the right is one of a
row of 'Railway Poplars' paralleling the railway, which can sometimes
be seen in old photographs of this location. The survivors are
reputed to have the largest girth for their type in the country.
