The reason for this is that this section of route - from Croydon to East Grinstead - was opened in 1884, almost 20 years after that from Tunbridge Wells to Uckfield, and nearly 30 years after the Lewes to Uckfield section.
The stretch of route from Hurst Green to Groombridge and Eridge via Edenbridge Town was not opened until 1888. (Grid Ref. TQ 395 526)
