North from Ashurst - October 2000Ashurst is situated on the first of the two passing loops south of Hever. Not far to the north, but out of sight in this view, the two tracks converge into one again at Blackham junction.
From Ahsurst, the route climbs steadily towards Cowden and Markbeech tunnel, where the line cuts through one of the sandstone Forest Ridges characteristic of the Weald.
The bridge in the foreground carries the
line across the River Medway. Once again, the potential of this
well engineered route for high speeds is evident. (Grid Ref. TQ
