Uckfield - mid-1970sA transitional view showing the station shortly after removal of the former extensive canopies but before it was repainted in BR's 1970s red, white and black colour scheme.
Note the crude wooden supports, which had been erected to support the deliberately neglected canopies.
It was around this time that the station footbridge was modified by the removal of the flights of stairs leading directly to the platforms. This left passengers with a much longer route to cross the track when the gates were open, leading to some anxious moments for latecomers wanting the London train.
Sadly this type of 'initiative' by BR was
only too common in the 70s and 80s on a line which had been transformed
from a secondary main line into a stagnating backwater.
