D6545 slowly enters what is now platform 4 with a Victoria - Brighton train via-Uckfield. Few of those aboard could have imagined that within just six years, an unholy alliance of bureaucrats and politicians would have combined to make this routine journey impossible.
The line to Uckfield can be seen branching away just beyond the rear of the train; it soon climbed above the rooftops, first on an embankment and then on a viaduct, crossing Cliffe High Street and then the River Ouse as it headed north towards Malling.
This approach into the town has been lost for good. Thanks to the construction of Phoenix Causeway and other, subsequent development, any attempt at reconstruction would simply be uneconomic.
Fortunately, however, an alternative exists: the building of a short stretch of track at Hamsey would allow trains from Uckfield to reach Lewes using the first two miles of the Lewes - Wivelsfield route.
