Hever - 1988An interior view of Hever signalbox. Built by the Southern Railway to replace an earlier free-standing design, this lean-to structure was built into the booking office so that besides selling tickets, staff could also operate the signals.
Symbolic of the neglect of the route by successive generations of BR management are the ancient two-position Tyer's block instruments, with their quaint miniature semaphore arms just visible.
By the time of this photograph, Hever was the only box remaining in use between Oxted and Eridge.
