The antique signalling equipment on display tells its own story.
For some time prior to closure, local youngsters had amused themselves by throwing missiles at the signalbox from the nearby road bridge. While British Rail and the Department of Transport worked together to destroy the route, they bided their time. Finally, in August 1985, the last train headed off for Selhurst and the chance came for them to complement official policy by burning the box down...
This area, which is now at the back of the
Sainsburys' supermarket, has become a coach park.
