Tunbridge Wells West - May 1983

Photographed from an Eridge-Tonbridge train, the size of the station site is evident. The value of this site for property development in this congested town helped to make closure an attractive option for BR in the mid-1980s.

In the distance is B box which controlled the single line from here to Grove junction on the Hastings route. Antiquated electric token equipment remained in use here until the very end. The sidings on the right were used to stable the fleet of DEMUs operating both this and the Uckfield-London service.

Note the partially dismantled crossover ahead of the train, typifying the pervasive atmosphere of decay which blighted this station in its final years.
