Lewes - 1969South of the gap cut in the line for the construction of Phoenix Causeway, the line ran on a viaduct through the centre of the town.
In this view, looking towards Lewes station, the results of the demolition work carried out that spring are only too obvious. In the middle distance is the bridge across Cliffe High Street.
None of this viaduct exists today, although a few remnants lingered on into the 1980s. The area in the foreground is now occupied by the local branch of Safeways, opened in 1980.
