Barcombe Mills - October 1968

BR made extensive use of the route for diversions from the Brighton line right up until closure, with the winter of 1968-69 being particularly busy. Because the route was not electrified, Hastings line diesel units were used for these services, providing a disinct improvement on the usual rolling stock.

In this view, 1034 and a sister-unit speed through on a Victoria-Newhaven boat train on 13 October. On arrival at Lewes, the train will reverse to complete the final leg of its journey to the coast.
