Lewes - 1969Summer 1969 - only a few weeks after the end of train services between Uckfield and Lewes, contractors have already removed a large section of embankment in Lewes to make way for the new road.
In the foreground of this view towards Uckfield, the foundations of the new road are already visible. The buildings on the left are part of the long closed Phoenix Ironworks and behind the digger, part of Every's bridge -- first of the Ouse crossings -- can be seen.
All that is left of this section of route now is the base of one of the bridge piers.
