Tunbridge Wells West - July 1985

One can hardly fail to be struck by the amount of space that was available to passengers at Tunbridge Wells West-- and the contrast with the cramped Central station, now plain 'Tunbridge Wells'.

Unfortunately, in the mid-1980s, both BR and a short-sighted government could only see the site in terms of its value as development land rather than as a transport asset.

The ugly corrugated steel structure on the nearest platform covers the entrance to the subway , which was exposed to the elements by the demolition of the previous platform building.
