Tunbridge Wells West - December
1985The winter sun does little to enliven the bleak prospect of Tunbridge Wells West in its first winter after closure -- without a train service for the first time in nearly 120 years.
To the left of the main station building can be seen the former steam shed, which had already been trackless and abandoned for many years prior to the route's closure. With a new concrete platform built alongside it, it has now become the base for the small-scale operations of the preserved Spa Valley Railway.
The area of sidings in the foreground is now occupied by a large Sainsburys store, while the land to the far left of this view is occupied by other large retail outlets. The rest of the site is now a car park.
Nevertheless, there is still
space in the redeveloped site for a single track to be constructed
approximately parallel to the line of the main station building.
