Groombridge - July 1985

A Tonbridge - bound train coasts to a stop at Groombridge in the last few days before closure.

Despite the obvious neglect of the buildings, the station remained a welcoming place to the last, thanks to the efforts of the local railwoman, who kept the booking hall clean and tidy, and laid out magazines for travellers on its large round table.

If BR managers had shown anything approaching the same level of commitment, the route would still be serving the local community today.
