Groombridge - August 1990In a decision that can at best be described as questionable, Wealden District Council planners permitted almost the entire site of Groombridge station to be redeveloped as a housing estate.
This left only a severely curved single track skirting the site for the use of what would become the preserved Spa Valley Railway. At the time of this photo, construction work on this new section of track (see bottom right) has just begun.
The previous well-aligned, double-track formation has already been ripped up, and the spacious platforms will soon share the same fate -- apart from a very short stretch adjacent to the station building, which will not even be aligned with the remaining track.
