The electric token machine, which in conjunction with a similar machine at Tunbridge Wells West B box, ensured the safety of the single track section to the West station. Above the windows can be seen the block bell and the leather pouches used to pass the tokens to train crews.
As with the rest of the Eridge - Tunbridge Wells route, the signs of under-investment were all too obvious, with many well-informed observers concluding that from the 1960s onwards British Rail had been pursuing a policy of closure by stealth.
Mid-1980s BR managment did little to challenge such notions, carefully re-timetabling the Eridge - Tonbridge service so that the previous good connections with London trains were lost - all the better to smooth the way to closure.
