A birds eye view of the former Grove Junction in its last full year of operation.
As part of the Hastings line resignalling works, the track layout shown here was replaced the following year by a single-lead junction, with both up and down branch trains using the former up platform at Tunbridge Wells Central.
Considering that saving £500,000 on the junction here was a major reason given for the closure of the Eridge line, it seems strange that this new junction was actually laid only to be removed after a few weeks!
One cannot help but wonder if a much more important motivation for the closure was actually the lucrative sale of the Tunbridge Wells West site for a major retail development. This was a good result for Sainsburys and British Rail's property sales - but not such a good one for local residents and the rail system as a whole.
