Grove Junction - April 1986

Work on the Hastings line electrification is almost complete, with conductor rails in place and technicians putting the finishing touches to the new signalling system that will be controlled from just three boxes: Tonbridge, Robertsbridge and Bopeep.

A few days after this shot was taken, Grove Junction signalbox went the same way as the junction it once controlled.

The Hastings line electrification could have been the catalyst for a regeneration of the Eridge route, which would have integrated it into the improved Charing Cross services and seen the underused West station become the terminus for trains that terminate at the former Central station.

Instead, it sounded its death knell - and, 20 years later, Network Rail is spending £5m on a special turnback siding just to the south of this point to accommodate those same trains.

Wouldn't it have been better to keep the West station open and turn those trains around there?
