The Dave Beard gallery

In 2003 the Sussex Express published a fascinating selection of pictures by local photographer Dave Beard, recalling the lost route of the Uckfield line into Lewes -- and its rapid demolition following closure in 1969.

Convinced that these rare and valuable photographs, largely taken between 1970 and 1972, would be of great interest to all those who follow our campaign, we immediately contacted the paper. Thanks to its good offices, we were able to get in touch with Mr Beard, who has generously granted us permission to publish his work.

Not only are his pictures an important part of the local historical record, but they are also a graphic reminder of the scandalous way that one of East Sussex's major transport assets was practically thrown away.

If you would like to learn about the background to the closure of the line, see our history section. Elsewhere on the site you will also find information on the present state of the route (both northern and southern sections) and details of our proposals to revive it, along with maps of the local rail system and 'Central Rail Corridor'.

And if you share our anger at the official vandalism these poignant photographs depict, there are two other things you should do: join our campaign and let your elected representatives know what you think.
