Libraries in south & west Wales

The information on this site is  entirely in the public domain, I am however indebted to the excellent reference book "Researching Family History in Wales" by Jean Istance and E E Cann 1996 for providing the initial data . Otherwise the data collection/updating  was mainly the work of  Jennie Newman  (1999)

I make no claim to this being a full list of libraries, or that the lists of holdings are correct or complete - all details must be checked direct with the libraries themselves.

THE CAMBRIAN INDEXING PROJECT

The Cambrian Index is a computer format index of "The Cambrian" - an important newspaper published in Swansea from 1804 throughout the nineteenth century.

The newspaper has been read and articles giving information covering the West Glamorgan area, and others considered to be of regional importance, including a number from Carmarthenshire & Pembrokeshire, extracted and entered onto a database in the form of a brief resume of the content of the article. All Births, Marriages and Deaths recorded in the newspaper are listed. Other entries are indexed by topic and are arranged in main groups of: -

Transport - Planning - Buildings - Agriculture - Politics - Education - Culture & Arts Health & Welfare - Sport & Recreation - Mining & Industry - Religion - Uniformed Forces - Crime & Crime Prevention - Ships & Shipping Disasters - & Accidents

The Index contains approximately 350,000 references and at present covers:

  • 1804 - 1909 for births, marriages and deaths
  • 1804 - 1873 for all other topics

These years may be accessed by date, subject, or name.

Information is generally at first supplied to the enquirer in the form of a printout of the resume of information to enable the enquirer to decide which items of information he/she wishes to pursue. The minimum charge for a search of the Index is £5.00 - this includes the search fee and up to 10 entries on a printout.

Cheques should be made payable to "THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SWANSEA" (Please do not send stamps as payment, as they cannot be accepted) We will telephone an enquirer to discuss requirements, should the charge greatly exceed £5.00. A contact telephone number should therefore be provided in each case.

Files of newspapers are available for consultation at Swansea Reference Library as microfilm, from which photocopies of articles may be made.

If requested, staff will undertake to find and photocopy the original article at an additional cost of 70 pence per photocopy.

Further information and advice on the use of the Index may be obtained by contacting;

Mrs. Marilyn Jones, Local Studies Librarian or Mr Richard Brighton, Project Supervisor on

Swansea - (01792) 516758 (Monday to Friday - 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.)
