RIDING SKILLS
resource
for all riders!

Wondering about things go wrong for riders?
Needing some suggestions on how to fix your own riding?
Looking for some pointers on improving your riding?

Wonder, need or look no more because...

"Mistakes We Make"
is available on CDROM

Most books look at the "Holy Grail" of the perfect ride. This book looks at riding from a far more realistic angle: the mistakes we make, how we can avoid them, and perhaps most importantly - how we can get out of trouble if we've already made the error!

By knowing where other riders get it wrong, we can hope to avoid the same mistake ourselves.

If you pre-order, you can get our new CDROM for just £10.00 - order now for priority delivery in early 2009!

The content is based on actual questions asked me by real riders in a decade of online interaction on motorcycle forums and via the Survival Skills website.

Pre-order this new CDROM from Survival Skills for just £10 - saving over 20% on the full price!

The content is highly relevant to all riders, from those just starting out on bike to those who've already taken training from any source.

Volume 1 of "Mistakes We Make" is due out in the spring! Pre-order now.

FAQs - questions about the e-books

Are these e-books suitable for a newly qualified rider?

They'd be perfectly suited - although they cover "advanced" technique, in reality all riding skills are a continuum anyway, so the e-books allow you to build on what you already know rather than approach advanced riding from the much repeated but totally incorrect "forget what you learned to pass the test and do something completely different" stance.

Are they suitable for a rider with advanced qualifications?

Definitely. Not least because they'll make you think about what you have learned, they will almost certainly cover some issues like rider psychology that you didn't look at on your training, and hopefully will make you look at riding in a different light.

Don't they cover the same stuff?

No.

"Course Notes" is a developmental training program, which looks at the key skills you need on a bike and shows you how to improve them.

"Tarmac Tactics" is more 'situational', in that it looks at a wide range of scenarios that a rider might find themselves in, offers an overview of the threats they pose and suggestions on how to stay out of trouble.

There's naturally some overlap, but the content is very different.

Cornering is covered in xxx - what's different in your e-books?

Quite simply, the 'Point and Squirt' technique that I've been using since the very early 90s. It's true it's not completely new (it's hard to find a "new" way to ride round a bend!), but what it does do is pull together the best techniques from a variety of different sources and work them into a system not just for riding bends, but by linking the straights between bends in, gives you a system for riding COMPLEXES of corners!

The e-books also look at the psychology of learning, and also how the brain functions in recognising and deciding what to do about hazards. Armed with that knowledge, the rider can 'train their brain', a much-neglected area in a field which is obsessed with better bike handling skills.

What makes your e-books different to all the other advanced riding guides?

Virtually every other book ('Ride Hard, Ride Smart' is an exception and so to some extent is 'Twist of the Wrist') explains how to do something well. The problem is that's only half the story, and in some ways the less important half. You also need to know where things go wrong, why things go wrong and how to deal with the situation when it does go wrong

We need to understand and adapt our riding to risk-based assessment and management techniques - learning perfect riding skills won't get you out of trouble, but they can quickly get you into it if you aren't aware of the risks! It's 'Defensive Riding' on steroids!

It's a pragmatic but very honest approach to riding, and one that if developed by the reader, will give much more insight into riding than simply trying to do things to perfection.

If your books are so good, why aren't they in print on paper?

Two reasons. I can keep the costs down by publishing myself on a cheap medium (books are expensive!) and I can constantly update the content if something new catches my eye.

...it's good, sensible, non-patronising, appealing, simple and uncluttered advice... exactly covers what we covered ...

"The Survival Skills CDROM is a work of genius. I'll definitely be recommending your CD to a few people who I know will benefit from it."
Kevin Wells

I've got [book by well known US writer] and both of the Survival Skills CD-ROMS. Of the two, I found Kevin's ebooks to be by far the most useful - they're excellent.

"Just what I was looking for, a special present to the wife to congratulate her on passing her test."
Tony

"Perfect! Figured out what OSM/PSL means already! I had been wondering! I see many moments passing.... my wife may not be so grateful!"
Euan Stronach

One question that gets asked from time to time is:

"why the Survival Skills series of CDROMs aren't published in book form?"

There are two simple answers:

  • - by not going though a conventional publisher, I cover all the production costs which keeps the cover price to you the customer, down
  • - I retain complete control over the contents and can thus update the content at short notice
