First prize £2,000
The Newbury Young Musician of the Year competition is well established amongst young talented musicians between the ages of fifteen and nineteen. A Southern Sinfonia partnership project funded by Greenham Common Community Trust Ltd, encourage String, Wind, Brass, Piano or Percussion players of Grade 8 standard to enter.
First prize is a cheque for £2,000, plus the chance to play on stage with our orchestra Southern Sinfonia – under their internationally known Chief Conductor David Hill. The runner up will receive £500. Entrants will be judged by a professional group of judges – initially by submitting a simple tape/disc. Heats will be held in April and the final on Sunday 18th June 2006 at the Corn Exchange, Newbury.

1. Applicants must be aged between 15 and 19 years on 16th June 2006.
2. Applicants must live or study within a 20 mile radius of Newbury Town Hall.
3. Instrumental categories are: String, Wind, Brass, Percussion and Piano.
4. Applicants should be playing Grade 8 standard.
5. Applicants should submit a demonstration tape/disc/mini disc of approximately 5 minutes of playing. More than one piece is acceptable, as is accompanied playing.
6. Heats will be held on Sunday 9th April.
7. Successful applicants will be invited to play in the final on Sunday 18th June 2006 at Newbury Corn Exchange in front of a panel of professional musicians.
8. Entries should be submitted on the Application Form found through the link at www.southernsinfonia.co.uk or by postal request from The Administrator, Southern Sinfonia, Nalder Hill House, Wickham Heath, Newbury RG20 8EU – please include a S.A.E.
9. An entry fee of £15 should accompany every application – made payable to Southern Sinfonia.
10. Demo tapes/discs must be sent by recorded delivery to the address on the application form.
