7. Our report to Monthly Meeting

Travelling Among Friends Around the World.

Report to Westminster Monthly Meeting, by Jennifer Kavanagh and Stephen Petter.

Before we left on our journey people asked first "Where are you going?", then one or two asked "What for?" A good question. Before we left I wrote in my journal:

To gain a new perspective, from seeing how life is in developing countries, away from the spoilt affluence of this insular part of the world; to learn to be less busy, to respond to the spirit, to be more spontaneous; to be useful, humble, learning and contributing; to try to live in the present and respond to the needs that present themselves. It will change us: who knows how?

We had several more specific aims. One was to visit Meetings and Friends, especially isolated ones. Another was to visit friends and relations and of course a third was simply to travel, meet people, see interesting places, have memorable experiences and generally to broaden ourselves.

We left on 18th April 2001 and visited 19 countries: Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, southern and western regions of the United States, British Columbia in Canada, Hawaii, Tonga, New Zealand, eastern Australia, Thailand, India for three months, Singapore, Beijing in China, Mongolia, Russia including Siberia, and Sweden, returning to England on 17 April 2002, exactly a year after our departure.

We stayed overnight with Friends 9 times, a total of 31 nights, and in Friends’ sojourners’ accommodation or guest houses six times. We attended 22 different Meetings, and visited three Quaker Centres (San Jose, Managua and Moscow), also a Quaker camp, a Quaker University, and a Quaker institute. We gave talks followed by discussions eight times and of course had many conversations, often quite deep. On several occasions Meetings for Worship that would not otherwise have taken place were organised because of our visit, most often because small groups had ceased to meet regularly. On several occasions we held meetings for worship attended only by the two of us. We visited four prisoners in Lima and Bangkok. We offered ourselves for voluntary work and were as it were used in 6 places round the world.

Our Monthly Meeting Travelling Minute was endorsed in Arequipa, La Paz, Coroico, Monteverde, San Jose, Orlando, Baton Rouge, Santa Fe, North Shore CA, Inland Valley CA, Victoria BC, Honolulu, Canberra, Melbourne, Delhi, Moscow and Stockholm.

In addition to the Quaker guest houses, in India we stayed in a Buddhist guest house (next to the room reserved for the Dalai Lama) and five ashrams. In Thailand Jennifer spent four nights in a Buddhist monastery and Stephen spent two nights in a Korean-run Christian Evangelical mission. At some of these we stayed long enough to settle into the mainly silent spiritual and religious routine, giving time for meditation, prayer, reading, and contemplative walking.

Before leaving we had joined an organisation called Servas. Founded by a Quaker to facilitate international understanding, Servas supplies lists of people willing to provide accommodation to like-minded travellers. We stayed with 12 Servas hosts, and these visits together with those to Quakers were amongst the richest spiritually.

To complete the record of our overnight accommodation, we also stayed with friends and relations on many occasions, and camped under the stars four times. Otherwise we usually stayed in just about the cheapest hotels of the type known as back-packers’ hostels, or motels. Our most extraordinary accommodation was six nights in gers, circular tents with walls of thick felt used by nomadic herdsmen in Mongolia. We also spent many wearisome nights in trains and buses.

We had round-the-world airline tickets but we travelled within south and Central America by bus, across north America by car, which we bought in Florida and sold in British Columbia, and across Asia in the trans-Mongolian and trans-Siberian trains.

In two places the work we did was teaching English. In a school not far from Delhi our presence allowed the teachers to have periods off while we presented the pupils with a fresh approach to learning. In Bolivia we found the Quaker school about which we had been informed had closed down through lack of funds. With the permission of the Quaker caretakers we put up notices in the town to the effect that free English lessons were available and we had two thriving classes for two weeks. Other work one or the other of us did was in a charity hospital children’s ward in Guatemala, in a slum kindergarten in India, and on a watershed management project.

Some meetings asked us just to talk about our travels, but others wanted something more substantial. For them we gave a talk entitled ‘Are Quakers primarily Christians, Mystics, or Social Activists?’. In addition Jennifer gave talks on micro-credit both to Quaker and to non-Quaker groups. It seems that in three places (Victoria, Melbourne and Ulaan Batar) her talk resulted in moves to start microcredit projects.

Although we were not primarily sightseeing we did visit some magnificent places, for instance Maya ruins, the Grand Canyon and another canyon in the Andes, Amazonian jungle, and the Gobi Desert. The five day train journey through Mongolia, Siberia and Russia was very impressive. The Indian countryside, especially as viewed from the open door of a train, in which one could stand in the cooling breeze, was fascinating in its colourful diversity. Working within sight of the Himalayas was profoundly moving.

We are often asked what our favourite place was. For serenity it was one of the islands of Tonga, where we were the only visitors amongst a population living in grass huts, eating the fish they caught and the vegetables they grew. For spiritual growth there can be no doubt that India is the most rewarding. Mongolia has rightly been called the last pristine country. Jennifer, who loves deserts, was captivated by the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, despite sub zero temperatures, continuous gales, and our experience of being trapped in a snowdrift. However, Mongolian food seemed to us the worst in the world!

We were overwhelmed by the hospitality, warmth and generosity of many Quakers and others we met. We wanted to give, but God seemed determined we should receive. Russian hosts insisted we ate their large, delicious meals (including caviar) so we sadly regained some of the weight we’d lost. We felt British attitudes to hospitality were greatly inferior to those of most of the rest of the world.

Our hope for progress in our spiritual lives was indeed realised. Both of us feel greatly enriched in that which is eternal. In India we had the time and the opportunity to read, discuss, and contemplate. We discovered the beliefs of a school of Hinduism very similar to those of Quakers, as well as their emphasis on putting their Faith into Action. We met many delightful, talented young adults who were devoting their lives to good works amongst needy peasants and refugees. Reading Quaker books now, we realise that many Quaker discoveries were in fact well known by the early Hindu and Buddhist seers. So we feel both enriched and humbled.

As to what we are to do next, we are trying to live more simply. Jennifer has become vegetarian. We are waiting for leadings as to what is required of us.

Stephen adds, "I had two powerful spiritual openings. While staying at the Bede Griffiths ashram in southern India, a Benedictine establishment, my reading, meditation and journalling resulted in a profound and joyous opening to do with the sense of the immediacy of God. I was so deeply moved I felt a need to undergo a physical ritual. So, alone, I went to the nearby river and immersed myself in its cool, limpid waters, to signify a transition from one life to another. Another deeply moving occasion occurred in Beijing. There I met, by chance it seemed, someone who knew and admired my biological father, about whom I knew little, and found that he had been a brave man of principle and something of a national hero."

For Jennifer too the people we met formed a significant part of her spiritual journey. She says: "Along the way were so many kindred spirits; women in particular who were in the same place or for whom we arrived at the right time – Quakers and others. One such was a Tongan woman, a Methodist thoroughly involved in the administration of her church. In a half hour rest at our Tongan "camp" she revealed a spiritual hunger that I was able to recognise. Aware of her own need for silence, she was deeply affected by hearing of our Quaker sharing of that silence.

"I was disappointed by my dryness in overtly spiritual places – ashrams where a commitment to regular worship was expected. I realised that I was resisting "times and places" and found myself opening passionately to the wildlife and the elemental landscapes – the vastness of mountains in South America, the desert in Mongolia, jungle in Peru, as well as the ever-changing beauty of India. I think my own need for peace has grown; I’m in a different place now, though the changes that the journey has made to both of us will only show up gradually. And then we will know how to proceed with the rest of our lives."

Jennifer and Stephen, 15/5/2002

8. Article for "Globetrotter" Magazine

MIDDLE AGED Round The World

My then partner and I (aged 55 and 65) went round the world for 12 months to April 2002. She has written a book on it and is looking for a publisher, I went to internet cafes to maintain a long journal. So rather than travellers' tales here are some notes on how we did it.

The RTW deal was from Star Alliance, giving us 12 months, 15 stops and 39000 miles. A couple of times when in dispute with an airline the Alliance link was useful. Their miles include overland legs which seems unfair but it is still good value. They allow back-tracking which we needed for India to China. We flew to Brasil for two lazy weeks to get over the strain of preparations, then to Lima. We took buses round Peru and despite being told it was impossible found a cheap way to Matthu Pichu. (Don't have time to check spellings. You'll know what I mean.) Three-day trips to Colka Canyon and to the Peruvian Amazon jungle. Bus and boat (aided by the Bolivian Navy!) to cold La Paz then bus on 'the most dangerous road in the world' to lovely Coroica. Flew to Costa Rica which seemed obscenely wealthy and American! But we had a wonderful time there - eco-tourism on the Carribean coast, and I wrote a report on working conditions on the banana plantations. Then buses through sad Nicaragua, tough Honduras (staying with the Garifuni) and Guatemala with its obscene contrast of wealth and poverty. We were in luxury after three months of back packers' hotels and crowded but fascinating bus journeys - we avoid 'luxury' or 'tourist' buses. Then we bought a car in Florida and eventually sold it in British Columbia. (One could write a book on each leg of the journey.) This was not as easy as it sounds - big problems with driver's licence and insurance. But surmountable. Boat and bus to Houston BC. Strange coming back to sophistication a few days after 9/11, a different world. Hawaii then fabulous Tonga. Real bliss as the only visitors on an idyllic island, and time to think. Here my partner discovered the magic of snorkelling. NZ was surprisingly far nicer than expected, Sydney also amazes. We were kept busy there and in Canberra and Melbourne giving talks. Thailand which my partner hated, but we made lasting friends there, one a prisoner not half way through 25 years for drugs. Dont even think about it! Interesting to contrast the type of tourists here with those in S America. Almost a different breed. So to the jewel, three months in India lived up to all my hopes and dreams. A stop-over in steamy sophisticated Singapore (the night time zoo worth a visit) thence to Beijing, and onto the trans-Asia train with stops including three weeks in Mongolia, Siberia (Lake Baikal), Moscow and glorious St Petersberg. Stockholm was refreshing and spring time in England utterly delightful.

Total cost not calculated, but less than the rent we got on our London homes. We ate local workers' food. We often stayed in people's homes - fellow-Quakers, a hosting organisation, far flung family and friends. Otherwise in the better rooms in cheap hotels. Motels (except some on Route 66) have no character but are great value. Or ashrams.

The only problematic visa was that for Russia, though others such as India and China needed some care. I was surprised to find one of the most irksome problems was using public telephones - one needs to see if mobiles can be adapted cheaply in each region. Only disappointments: despite three weeks in most places we usually seemed to be in a hurry, and sadly my slides turned out bad.

Essentials include up-to-date Guides, both Visa and Mastercard (and some areas only take Maestro), insect repellent and anti-itch cream, and a hat if you are bald like me. I had to have scalp cancer treatment on return. I was supplied with and shown how to use self catheterisation by UCH. Never had to do it but without it I would not have dared go to Tonga, or deep into the Gobi. Medically we had very few problems, tummy bug twice, and chest complaints in the Andes. I got shingles when in Thailand but was easily able to get powerful drugs (for £50 - a fortune) which knocked it out. But we had quite a few muscular strains and joint problems from lugging our packs (and from 3 days meditating cross legged in a Buddhist temple!) We both had Karrimor wheeled rucksacks and seldom had to hump them.

My advice - just DO IT! Don't worry about food and accommodation and robbery. Ignore travel mags and ads. They make it scary so you'll use their expensive services. Just GO!.

More details on the web site (www.geocities.com/jkandsp), but sad I don't have time and space to mention our lovely hosts and the travellers and locals we met.
