The Military History Page

As with most of my hobbies I seem to spend more time reading about this subject than doing anything about it. But that shouldn't be the case. We in England have stacks of Military History all around us, battlefields, castles, hillforts, coastal defences. We should get out there and see, enjoy and help to preserve them.

Over the past few  years I have visited:

Palmerston Fortifications
Crownhill Fort - Plymouth, Devon Excellent restoration of a Victorian fort with lots of guns and tunnels.
Fort Nelson - Portsdown Hill, Hampshire An impressive victorian fort (one of Palmestons follys) built to fend off Napoleon III.
Fort Brockhurst - Gosport, Hampshire One of a string of forts defending the western side of Portsmouth harbour.
Nothe Fort - Weymouth  Victorian fort with lots of WWII add-ons.
Newhaven Fort - Sussex Set atop the cliffs overlooking the harbour enterance.
Dartmouth Castle - Old Battery Victorian addition to this medieval castle.

  Napoleonic Defences
Martello Towers (South-East coast) Napoleonic constructions built 1805-12 as gun platforms along the south and south-east coasts.
Eastbourne Redoubt - (Eastbourne)

  17th Century Defences
The Royal Citadel - Plymouth
Fort Cumberland - Portsmouth
