The negative binomial vs 1 help page has moved to this location.
This version of the negative binomial distribution is a generalization of the Poisson as used to study the distribution of accidents and events at the individual level. For the negative binomial the variance is introduced to express the level of accident or disease proneness in the population. The larger the variance is relative to the mean, the higher the level of proneness.
