17/02/02 'New Favorite' - Alison Krauss + Union Station
One of my most played albums of recent months has been this gem, a superb
marriage of bluegrass/country and mainstream song writing.
I have often seen
this album marketed on the back of the 'O Brother, Where Art Thou' soundtrack
album but really this is unnecessary. Krauss' latest album with Union
Station shines with fantastic ensemble playing and once again showcases the
superb voices of Krauss and Dan Tyminski. The band's command of their
craft is deftly shown on tracks like 'The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn' and
'Choctaw Hayride' while 'The Lucky One' and 'I'm Gone' are wistful, more subtle
efforts. Throughout you never fail to be delighted by the quality of song
writing and musicianship. This is definitely one of the best releases of
2001 and highly recommended as an introduction to modern bluegrass music.
