13/08/01 'De Stijl' - The White Stripes
This album has really caught me by surprise. I mean I'm usually hunting
out the latest chill out or hip-hop CD these days since great ballsy guitar music
is rarely heard and Radiohead have gone all experimental (with great results).
So I almost missed the review of a live performance by the White Stripes, from Detroit, here in
London. The story goes like this; with zero promotion and no hype the
White Stripes consisting of siblings Jack and Meg White (he sings and plays
guitar while she drums) have taken the UK music scene by storm.
Part of it seems due to the way British DJ John Peel has plugged the band
and the storming gigs they have played during their short London tour. And most remarkable is the music. It's stripped down
country/blues with great melodies thrown in to confuse the critics. I mean, check out that cover! It
certainly doesn't prepare
you for what comes out of your speakers.

Now while no one is calling them innovators, going back to the basics these days almost seems like
a revolutionary thing to do.
And with the release of their third album, 'White Blood Cells' on their own label, Sympathy For The Record Industry,
it looks like they can continue to tell the suits where to go. There were no free tickets at their gigs and
apparently (I quote from the Independent 10/08/01 here), 'potential press officers were required, to, yes, write a letter
explaining why they were the company for the job'. Good on them I say.
So is this all hype? Maybe but listen to the music first and then prepare to
become a fan.
