12/10/01 'Fear Of Fours' - Lamb
With a new Lamb album suddenly released with no great publicity I think it's
worth mentioning this duo's fantastic second album. Call it trip-hop or
jazzy electronic mood music or anyone else you care to dream up (I am absolutely
rubbish at categorising music!), Andy Barlow and Lou Rhodes have put together a
great set of tunes given greater depth by Rhodes' stylish vocals and their
atmospheric production.
The
occasional sample is thrown into a clever mix of strings, percussion and brass
underlined by inventive beats holding it all together. Lyrically I'm not
sure how they stand since I don't care to decode words much if the music is
doing what it is supposed to. Nevertheless I would say it's sparse but
effective, leaning towards a sense of individual and collective isolation, 'we
forget to live' for example closes track two. It is certainly nowhere near as
dystopian as say Radiohead though not a million miles away musically.

The new album promises much based on what they have achieved so far and it is
surprising that not more of their music with it's downbeat hooks and musings
haven't found their way into more adverts. The exception as far as I am
aware is the wonderful 'Five' used on a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter credit card
commercial. If you are looking for something that rewards repeated
listening I thoroughly recommend Lamb's work.
