Tab cut off

tab removed

Tailplane tab cut off: 2002 03 28.

Canon AV-1, Fujichrome Velvia 50.

The end result of some rather tense cutting - the port trim tab is free from the tailplane. One is very conscious while cutting on the upper surface that the cut line will be visible for ever afterwards!

Attaching tab hinges

tab hinge attachment

Tab hinge attachment: 2002 05 09.

Canon AV-1, Fujichrome Velvia 50.

Aligning the hinges for attachment to the starboard tab. Note the parcel tape over the hinge knuckles to minimise contamination by epoxy.

Tailplane alignment

tailplane alignment

Tailplane alignment: 2005 05 29.

Canon AV-1, Fujichrome Velvia 50.

Aligning the tailplane halves for correct positioning of the second trim tab drive pin. Both tailplanes must be at the same angle of incidence, and both tabs must be aligned with their respective tailplane halves, achieved here by clamping along the TEs. Finally a close-fitting tube is slid over both drive pins to keep them in line.

From this angle (looking aft from the tailplane torque tube), the tab drive pin alignment tube is visible.
