William Smith was born at Foveran, Aberdeenshire about 1834, the son of Robert Smith and Elizabeth Shand.
In 1841 aged 8 years, Robert was with his parents at Auchloon. At age 26 in 1861 he is recorded at South Cottar House, Ironrieves, Belhelvie where he is a cattleman with his widowed mother aged 70.
